"Sure, You Can Ask Me a Personal Question"

In " Sure, You Can Ask Me a Personal Question" by Diane Burns I liked the sarcastic tone throughout the poem. This shows how annoyed she is by hearing the same stereotypical questions about Native Americans. When Burns says "Yeah.  Uh huh.  Sprituality...." in the third stanza shows how often she hears the same thing from people over and over.

  1. I really liked Diane Burn's poem! I felt as if I was actually talking to someone or listening to the conversation! Although the speaker hears the same thing over and over again, I feel that the speaker has a strong stance about how she feels. She wants people to stop confusing her and thinking she's something else. Also, I think the tone is very strong in this poem. It is as if the speaker is never wrong and that their always making a statement so it is engrained in the audience's mind to "never call them something else." I think the speaker wants to break down those stereotypes and have people recognize all the different nationalities and different cultures out there.

  2. Diane Burn's poems are very nice. I like it a lot. It have its own meaning and different style to it, especially in her poem "Sure, You Can Ask Me A Personal Question." Like you said, it has a very sarcastic tone which, i think, makes the poem better. With a sarcastic tone, it shows how ignorant people are of Native Americans. Overall, her poems are amazing and her writing style that she uses makes the poem she writes better.

  3. I liked this poem a lot as well because it is so strong and the message is very clear. She is fed up with all of the stereotypes that she has to deal with every day being a Native American. She talks about several different stereotypes and brings them up in a way that makes it feel like she is kind of telling a story. She brings up stereotypes of being an indian princess or being a Navajo, Cherokee, or other main Native American groups as well as others. She is tired of being judged and expresses herself in this poem.

  4. I think the sarcastic tone of poem is something that emerges out as the power of this dialogue . It's an example of a dialogue engulfing a monologue in itself . Her frustration over answering these stereotypical questions has made her accustomed of being seen as an alien . My favourite part of this poem is when the person from whom she is talking says that " I like your hair" and her of liking his hair too is a kind of answer that you are not the only one who could be sarcastic and teasing but I too.
